How to get proof of insurance

With most insurance companies, you’ll be able to receive proof of insurance right after you purchase a policy. At Progressive, we can immediately email or fax insurance proof as soon as you make your initial payment. If you have an existing policy with us, you can instantly get ID cards or coverage info by calling or going online, 24/7. You can also access our mobile app. If you’re a business owner with a general liability policy, you may want a special “certificate of insurance.”Get quoteQuote & save today!Zip CodeSelect a product                     AutoAuto + HomeAuto + RentersAuto + CondoBoat/PWCBusinessCar ShoppingClassic CarCommercialCondoElectronic DeviceFloodGolf CartHealthHomeownersHomeshareHome FinancingHome RefinancingHome SecurityHome WarrantyID TheftLife-TermLife-PermanentLife-Final ExpenseMexico AutoMobile HomeMotorcycle/ATVPersonal LoansPetRV/TrailerRentersSegwaySnowmobileTravelWedding & Event                 How do you want to share?FacebookTwitterEmail

Access your digital insurance cards through our app

Every state except for New Hampshire, New Mexico, and Washington DC allows drivers to use digital insurance cards. That means you don’t have to worry about carrying around a piece of paper in your wallet or storing it in your glove compartment. Progressive lets you access your insurance card and coverages right from our app. If you’re pulled over by a police officer and asked to show proof of insurance, you simply show the ID card on your phone.

Progressive lets you access your insurance card and coverages right from our app.

What is visible on your vehicle insurance card?

Most insurers, including Progressive, will display some basic information on your card:

  • Name and address of the insurance company
  • Effective date and expiration date
  • Policy number and NAIC (National Association of Insurance Commissioners) number
  • First and last name of the “named insured”
  • Year, make, model, and VIN (vehicle identification number) for the insured vehicles

The card generally represents that you are carrying at least the minimum amount of coverage in your state required by law. However, your insurance card will NOT list your coverage selections and limits. That information can be viewed on your declarations page, which lists your policy’s key details including coverages, limits, and deductibles.

What is a certificate of insurance for business owners?

A certificate of insurance (COI) is simply a document verifying a valid insurance policy, typically used by small business owners. Also known as a certificate of liability insurance, it is a piece of paper that details the liability limits on a business owner’s policy as well as the type of coverage.

The certificate will be accessible as soon as you purchase a commercial liability policy. At Progressive, we can fax or email this document at any time. If you’re a business owner bidding on a contract, you’ll often need a COI to show a prospective client that you hold the necessary liability coverage for protection against injuries or damages.

Is an SR-22 or FR-44 the same thing as a Certificate of Insurance?

Not really. While an SR-22 or FR-44 is also a document that proves you have insurance, it is filed with your state as a form showing financial responsibility. A simple insurance card or piece of paper detailing your policy certainly certifies that you’re insured, but it is NOT a substitute for an SR-22.

Do I need proof of insurance on a home, renters, or condo policy?

You usually won’t need or be issued an insurance card for home, renters, or condo insurance. However, if your apartment complex, for example, requires a certain amount of insurance, your declarations page will have that information. After purchasing a home policy through Progressive Home Advantage, your agent or one of our direct representatives can immediately provide proof of insurance to your home lender, landlord, rental office, condo association, or wherever you’d like. Was this article helpful?Explore moreWill home and auto insurance cover severe weather?New car?
