As one amazing year for cinema ends, another potentially begins. At least, that’s our hope now that we’ve seen loads of trailers for the rest of the year’s films ahead.

We’ve got huge blockbusters, enticing animated sequels, and other compelling flicks in the mix, and this is just the start. There are plenty other compelling-looking movies on the horizon, and as some of these films release and new trailers for others roll out, we’ll refresh the list to help you refuel your own personal hype machine.

Without further ado, these are our 17 most-anticipated films of 2019.

The MonsterVerse

Is in full swing! Following both 2014’s Godzilla reboot and 2017’s Kong: Skull Island, Godzilla: King of the Monsters expands the rebooted and combined monster universe by introducing Mothra, Rodan, and King Ghidorah to battle with Godzilla.

Looks like another fun monster mashup, and we hope you’re ready for more because it’ll all culminate in 2020’s Godzilla vs. Kong. No, really! Everything’s a cinematic universe now… and hopefully King of the Monsters makes this one worth continuing on with.

Dark Phoenix

Is surely the last of Fox’s core X-Men flicks now that the characters are under the wing of Disney and the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and it’s focusing on one of the most iconic storylines in mutant comic-book history.

It’s also material that was covered in the terrible X-Men: The Last Stand, but thankfully that’s been retconned out of the universe, allowing the current cast of actors and creatives to offer a more faithful rendition of Jean Grey’s embrace and abuse of incredible power.

MEN IN BLACK INTERNATIONAL 2019

The iconic original Men in Black duo of Will Smith and Tommy Lee Jones is officially retired, but as replacements go, Chris Hemsworth and Tessa Thompson look like pretty inspired choices. They were a delight in Thor: Ragnarok, and look much the same in Men in Black: International.

Shifting the scene in London, International keeps the silly sci-fi tone with wacky aliens and cool tech, delivering what ought to be another crowd-pleaser of a summer blockbuster.

TOY STORY 3
It’s been several years since the emotional gut-punch that was Toy Story 3, but Pixar and Disney weren’t content to let Woody and Buzz rest in the toy box forever.

Toy Story 4 has been billed as a road trip movie for the plastic crew, and they have an odd new member along for the ride: Forky, a makeshift spork toy who doesn’t quite fit with his new store-bought pals. This series has only produced insta-classics to date, so even with Pixar’s spotty record with other sequels, we’re keeping the faith.

Child’s Play
All of the horror greats are getting a fresh chance at life lately, and Child’s Play seems to have found a fun way to revive the possessed-murderous-doll tale for the modern era.

Here, the knife-wielding Chucky is a connected toy gone bad – and that’s especially treacherous for just about everyone around him, given that he can connect to smart cars, thermostats, and many other devices. Child’s Play has some great actors onboard (including Mark Hamill as the voice of Chucky) and seems to strike the right tone while delivering plenty of gory deaths.

YESTERDAY
Everyone knows The Beatles, of course. But what if they didn’t? And what if you were the one person who did? And what if, conveniently, you were also a pretty solid singer and guitarist?

It’s all hilariously far-fetched, but that’s what makes this Yesterday trailer so darn charming. Danny Boyle’s latest tells that story, of a struggling musician who gets into a brutal accident and wakes up into a world where only he seems to know Lennon and McCartney’s classics. Naturally, he takes advantage of the situation and turns those songs in his head into smashes… but expectedly, things start to go awry. Should be a fun one.

SPIDER MAN (FAR FROM HOME)
Avengers: Endgame isn’t even out yet, but thanks to the miracle of modern blockbuster scheduling, it sure looks like Spider-Man is back to life in the aftermath of that April epic. Spider-Man: Far From Home is the wall-crawler’s next live-action solo adventure following Homecoming, and it sees him… well, far from the familiar on a trip to Europe.

It’s there that he encounters Mysterio, an iconic comic villain – but Nick Fury is there as well. With Homecoming’s original director onboard, a couple of slick new suits, and apparently the same winning blend of humour and action, we can’t wait to see the web-head in action again this summer… even if its mere existence is kind of a huge spoiler.

You’ve probably seen people calling this the “live-action” remake of The Lion King, but that’s half-true at best. It’s actually another hyper-realistic CG flick that looks convincingly lifelike, but is the result of performance capture, high-end workstations, and impeccable artistry. (Also, good luck getting scores of real animals to act on command like this.)

As this first trailer shows, Jon Favreau’s take on The Lion King seems largely content to follow the exacting storyline and set pieces of the ’90s animation classic. Even if that holds true for the finished product, the star-studded voice cast and stunning visuals should make it a treat to take in.

ONCE UPON A TIME IN HOLYWOOD

Any Quentin Tarantino film should be considered an event, and that’s what we have to look forward to this summer with Once Upon a Time in Hollywood. The flick features Brad Pitt, Leonardo DiCaprio, and Margot Robbie in an old-school Hollywood mystery.

And it has a real historical hook: the Manson Family murders of 1969. DiCaprio stars as an actor, Pitt plays his stunt double and pal, and Robbie is the infamous Sharon Tate—the actress whose murder defined the Manson reign of terror. We already know how that part ends, but have to believe that Tarantino’s road there will be an entertaining one. Early reviews have been incredibly positive so far.

FAST & FURIOUS PRESENTS : HOBBS and SHAW (AUGUST 2019)
After eight core films that have pulled in rapidly increasing sums of cash, it’s no surprise that we’re finally getting a Fast & Furious spinoff with Hobbs & Shaw. Granted, these guys aren’t the headliners of the franchise, but they’re perfectly poised for an utterly ridiculous action flick.

Just look at this first trailer. Idris Elba as a classic bad guy? Check. The Rock being The Rock? Yup. Jason Statham as a low-key badass? You got it. As a riotously dumb, rollicking summer blockbuster, it’s hard to see how this won’t entertain.

IT’S CHAPTER 2 (SEPTEMBER 6)
After 2017’s It reboot became the highest-grossing horror flick of all time, it’s no surprise to see It Chapter Two on the horizon – but quite a bit of time has passed since the events of the last film.

It’s been 27 years since the last story, which means all of those kids are now adults played by legit actors – including Jessica Chastain, James McAvoy, and Bill Hader. Legend has it that evil, murderous clown Pennywise returns every 27 years, so yeah… it’s about to go down. The trailer above is already plenty freaky, so hopefully the full flick lives up to the hype created by the last one.

21 BRIDGES (21st SEPTEMBER)
Black Panther himself Chadwick Boseman takes on a much different kind of role in 21 Bridges, as a New York City detective on the hunt for a pair of cop killers. To find them before they flee the city, the NYPD shuts down every bridge, train, and waterway out of Manhattan.
That’s an interesting enough premise on its own, but as the trailer shows, things get twisty quick as the detective discovers a conspiracy within the NYPD’s own ranks. Boseman is plenty captivating, plus Avengers directors The Russos lent their production talents here as well.

JOKER (4th OCTOBER )
Heath Ledger delivered the definitive Joker portrayal in The Dark Knight, but Joaquin Phoenix might put up a fight in the new Joker. It’s helmed by the director of The Hangover trilogy, but DC’s solo film certainly channels the twisted side of Batman’s most iconic villain.

Here, we see Arthur Fleck as a failed comedian whose life descends into madness, and it seems like much of the film focuses on the human that ultimately becomes the psychotic, face-painted clown that we all know. Whatever the case, it looks super compelling.

TERMINATOR (DARK FATE) 23rd October
“Dark Fate” could reasonably describe the franchise over the last few films, so we really ought not to have much faith in this one. But with both Arnold Schwarzenegger and Linda Hamilton onboard, along with James Cameron behind the scenes and the director of Deadpool behind the lens, we’re coming into this one optimistic.
The first trailer (above) still gives us more vibes of the latest Terminator flicks rather than the classics, but we’re holding out hope that it’ll actually be great.

FROZEN 2 (23rd November)
Six years after we all pondered whether or not we ought to build a snowman (and then ultimately decided to let it go), Disney’s Frozen is finally back for a sequel. And wow, this trailer doesn’t have a bit of whimsy in sight.

True, the original film had plenty of drama and emotion packed in, but it also had breezy songs and comic relief. So far, we haven’t seen any of that in Frozen 2 – but it promises to be a musical again plus Olaf is back in tow, so we’ll probably get another well-balanced crowd-pleaser of a CG animated flick. Still, it’s interesting that Disney is leading with this darker look.

STAR WARS: THE RISE OF SKYWALKER (19th DECEMBER)
The Episode IX trailer is finally here! As it’s now officially named, Star Wars: The Rise of the Skywalker brings the core saga to an end, picking up some time after The Last Jedi and bringing back the new generation of Star Wars heroes along with some fresh faces – and Billy Dee Williams as Lando, thankfully.
We won’t spoil the twist at the end here: just watch the trailer to get a sense of what’s coming in this flick. Or don’t watch, and actually try to save the surprise this time around. Choose your destiny.

Does Sonic the Hedgehog look good. No, no it does not. Will we see it anyway out of fear of missing out on something truly, spectacularly wacky? Yes, yes we will.

SONIC THE HEDGEHOG (26th DECEMBER)
Sonic the Hedgehog goes the live-action route, with Sonic himself as a CG hero in a world of real humans—including Dr. Robotnik himself, (possibly) brilliantly portrayed by Jim Carrey in a throwback to his zanier early roles. There’s some cringe-worthy stuff here, along with a couple of solid jokes, and the fan blowback has already led to a promise of changes to Sonic’s look. Will it be decent, or can it top Super Mario Bros. as a legendary flop? We can’t wait to find out.
